HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU GET AN OIL CHANGE?

When you should change your oil depends on the type of vehicle you drive, your driving habits, and what type of oil your vehicle uses. If you drive an older car, for instance, the suggested interval between oil changes is usually 5,000 miles or every six months.

Newer model cars that use synthetic oil can last even longer between oil changes. Some synthetics will last anywhere from 10,000 miles to 15,0000 miles between changes.

Severe driving conditions, like extremely hot or cold climates, may warrant shorter intervals between oil changes.

Additionally, if you are driving in these conditions, you may need to check your oil more frequently:

  • Primarily short trips (five miles or less)
  • Sustained stop-and-go driving
  • Frequently towing a trailer or hauling heavy loads
